City Government
Wahpeton is governed under North Dakota's "Modern Council" laws. The city is divided into four Wards. "Modern Council" provides for one council member from each ward and four council members "At Large" (from any ward) to be elected for four-year terms. The terms are staggered so every two years, two ward council members and two "At-Large" members are elected. The mayor is the 9th member of the governing body and also serves for a four-year term.
The city council meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. unless the Monday is a holiday, then the meeting is moved to Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. Agendas and meeting information are prepared the Thursday before the scheduled meeting. If you have an issue you want to bring before the city council, please contact Auditor/Finance Director Darcie Huwe at 701-642-8448 or e-mail darcieh@wahpeton.com.
The mayor presides at all council meetings and retains the power of veto, however, the mayor votes only to break ties. The Mayor appoints all city officers subject to council approval and appoints members to various boards and commissions.
